Fragile

I have been exploring emotional and physical spaces and loss, drawing comparisons between damage in historic textiles and grief or loss. The damaged cloth used here looks like a map of destruction. This slow stitched piece is about the interaction between humans and animals in making and unmaking cloth. The silk (made by worms) has been woven by humans and then unmade by mice.

Silk, linen, hand stitch, mice.

Part of Cultures of Care

This is part of my two-year Cultures of Care project funded by Arts Council England 2023-2025.

Cultures of Care is an umbrella for several creative activities including residencies with community organisations, research projects in museums and new work on topics such as migration, destroyed communities and other hidden stories of care and damage of people, places and objects.

Making Meaning Journal is part of my Cultures of Care project. Issue 1 includes projects and artworks related to the care. Find out more here.
