Charm Gown in memory of Douglas Eaton, 1916-2012. Commission for Museum Metamorphosis conference, School of Museum Studies, University of Leicester. The commission brief was to choose an item from New Walk Museum’s collections and create a new artwork showing a metamorphosis from the original object to the new. I chose to work from a Nigerian ‘charm gown’, a spiritual garment invested with magical and protective properties through the use of amulets, sacred texts and designs. I was interested in how simple fabric could become something more powerful through the intervention of an artist. The piece is in memory of my grandad, Douglas Eaton, and uses text, textiles and objects from his house, creating a feeling of comfort and safety.
