The Star Quilt (2014) grew out of my collaboration with Sharyn Dunn last year.
The paper-pieced patchwork is inspired by Victorian quilts and the generations of anonymous quilters who made them. The transparency of the textiles used reflects layers of stories and history embedded within historic cloth.
I have used a variety of techniques to create each of the patches; layering sheer fabrics, reverse appliqué, hand embroidery, natural dye, digital print (of a hand embroidery) and shadow embroidery. There are many different types of sheer and semi-sheer fabrics included, which makes it very textured.
This piece was shown in the Pattern & Place Textiles Open Exhibition at Solihull Gallery during March 2015.
