Cultures of Care online talk & workshop

I’ve had such a lot of interest over the last couple of months about my new Cultures of Care project – it’s been really heartwarming to hear from people about how this subject resonates.

There’s a lot going on with the project already including a community project artist residency, supported spaces in my Maker Membership (all allocated and up and running) and my exhibition Material Evidence in my home studio. To share the project more I’ve got online things coming up in September & October too which I hope many people around the world will be able to join.

Cultures of Care online talk 27th September at 7pm UK time. In this talk I’ll be sharing lots of my new and recent work and how I’m creating a project about Care. I’ll share how I’ve created this project, the different elements of it and new things I’ve been working on over the last few months.

The talk will be a Zoom webinar with lots of images and you will be able to type in your questions afterwards. I’ll also be recording the talk so you can catch up later if you can’t make the time or want to watch again afterwards. It’s just £8 for the talk or you can get it for £5 if you book the workshop as well.

The online version of Textile Traces workshop is as near as I can make it to the in-person workshop I’m running this week at my home studio. There’s more about that here which will give you a taster of what the online workshop will involve. I want to share what I have learned about creating artwork inspired by a family textile collection so you can record, archive and treasure your own family history. All the techniques I’m sharing are ‘non-invasive’ meaning they don’t involve any damage or cutting the original pieces you are inspired by. We’ll start with spending some time thinking about the precious pieces you want to work with and what stories you want to draw out of them. I’ll demonstrate some techniques and ideas for you to experiment with at home using your own textiles and materials. There’s a suggested material list in the workshop but there’s nothing really expensive or hard to get and you can always watch the video back again once you have assembled all the materials you want to use. We’ll look at taking rubbings from textured fabrics, simple drawings of elements of the textiles, using paper, scissors and knives to create cut-work, I’ll demonstrate using cyanotype papers and fabrics and also look at stitching into paper and photographs. I’ll also talk about using photography and digital print to record your family textiles and share some tips for making this really powerful and personal. The online workshop is £35 and you can book it here.

You can also book both for £40, saving £3 by using this link.

And finally, if textiles making is your thing, you might like to look at my Textile Study Space too.
