Record and catalogue antique textiles, tell family stories and create artwork that does not damage the precious textiles. In-person and online workshops with Ruth Singer

When I created my work Imprint, I knew I wanted to share what I learned from the process. Imprint is an artwork archive recording details and stories about a family textile collection I have been given. The artworks are all created without cutting or damaging any of the textiles and serve as a great demonstration of how to make a creative archive of precious family stories and textiles.

Imprint is on display in my exhibition Material Evidence 2-20th August

I’m running two workshops sharing these ideas and techniques, one in person using the inspiration textiles themselves and one online where you can use your own textiles at home.

In both workshops we will begin with thinking about the importance of the stories embedded within the textiles and what we most want to capture with our work. We’ll learn processes that don’t harm the textiles like taking rubbings, making line drawings (like I was taught to do for museum catalogues), use a variety of materials for tracing details, cut work, Cyanotype and use a light box to capture details with photography. I’ll also share digital techniques and image manipulation.

Both workshops are designed to allow you to learn techniques and processes as well as think about the reasons behind doing this non-invasive work with precious textiles and focus on the story you want to tell.

In-person workshop Saturday 12th August 10am-1pm at Ruth’s garden studio, in the Material Evidence exhibition, Loughborough.  £55 including all materials. Book here

Online workshop 16th September 2-5pm UK time. £35 materials list supplied at time of booking. Book here.
