I’m developing a weekend of research and reflective prompts, mini workshops and community chats exclusively for my Maker Membership in November
Maker Membership is my online community for creative curiosity. I support Members to explore the why behind their work, to build more research into their making and to share and connect with like-minded people.
Every six months I share a creative brief or theme for Members to explore. The theme is a prompt or creative research starting point which Members can choose to work on in-depth or not as they wish. I encourage Members to create things using their own style, in their own artistic voice and to explore what interests them most, so the themes are just a starting point, a jumping off into whatever inspires you the most.
Over the last year or two I’ve started offering a mini workshop or some videos about each theme to support personal experiments and explorations into the ideas. This time, with the theme of Learning By Hand, I am offering a weekend retreat for the first time.

The Learning By Hand theme for 26-27 is of course related to my two projects The Victorian Hand and Hand & Heart and we are focussing on the theme of hands for the retreat. I will keep the prompts open enough for Members to adapt to their own themes if they aren’t choosing to work on a hands-related topic. All of the resources within the Membership (there are lots!) are about finding your own way, learning your own style, building your own interests, rather than learning techniques or ways of making the same as mine.
This creative online retreat will be a wonderful way to share ideas, learn new ways of research, of thinking, of gathering and collecting ideas, of reflecting on our interests and our creative strengths. The retreat is partly live sessions where we can share and connect with others and partly recorded video or written resources to dig into in our own time. My hope is that Members will invest the time in their own creative practice over just one weekend to really inspire and kick start many creative developments. The Retreat is free to all Maker Memberships, along with loads of resources, monthly meetings and free access to my Textile Book Group too, as well as discounts on other courses and workshops.
You can see work Members have made in the 2025 online exhibition Making With Care.
I recently ran a Maker Membership Free Taster live session to help people figure out of Maker Membership is right for them. You can still register for and watch the replay of that taster here for free, or if you have more questions, you can email me ruthsingerstudio@gmail.com
Maker Membership is open now, to all makers wishing to build more community, connection, research and meaning into their practice. It is not exclusively a textile maker community but most of us do work in textiles, but other practices are welcome. Maker Membership is £25 per month or £250 for a year.
Tangled: Textile Stories of Care & Connection
Tangled answers the question I get asked the most: “Where do you get your ideas from?” This book includes essays on how I got to where I am now, how museums and heritage are threaded through my work and how the themes of care, connection and history continue to guide everything I make.
Tangled is 150 pages in glorious A4 paperback with photos of almost every piece I have made in the last decade. Printed in the UK.
